Henderson is one of the 100 biggest cities in America and continues to be one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. And yet, despite the pace of growth and the challenges it brings, the City has reduced emissions, conserved essential resources and enhanced the quality of life that makes Henderson such a special place to live, learn, work and play.

Climate & Energy

  • Henderson worked with local partners to develop a community greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory in order to estimate and ultimately reduce our city’s total emissions.

  • The community’s GHG emissions were reduced by 2.6 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) per capita between 2005 and 2019, while the population grew 30%.

  • Henderson completed a GHG inventory of emissions from its municipal operations during 2020.

  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy sourcing has contributed to CO2e emission reduction of the municipal operations since 2005.

Development

  • In 2021 the first C-PACE project was financed in the City, a mixed-use project that will have over 300 multifamily residential units and 30,000 square feet of retail space.

  • With emphasis on sustainable building practices, Fire Station 85 have been purposefully designed to receive Green Globes and LEED certifications

Water Conservation

  • Municipal Code enhanced requirements for ongoing water conservation efforts

  • In 2020 and 2021, approximately 2 million square feet of grass have been converted in the City of Henderson through Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Water Smart Landscapes program which saves 118 million gallons of water annually.

  • The Henderson Community has conserved 435 million gallons of water since 2012.

  • In 2019, the City started the Irrigation Meter Data Patrol Program (IMDP) to monitor adherence to the regional water restrictions. The IMDP resulted in a 24 million gallon or 21% water savings on the meters in the program.

Trees and Green Spaces

  • The American Forests organization evaluates a “tree equity” score for cities. Henderson was divided into 184 census blocks, each of which was evaluated, and received an average score of 83 out of 100.

  • The City has 68 parks and an estimated 67% of residents are within a 10-minute walk to a park. The City is designing “parklets” to increase access in areas where a full-sized park may be space restricted.

  • The City formally opened 4.5 miles of Harry Reid UPRR Trail Expansion in early 2022 adding to the 220-mile trail system in Henderson that connects parks and recreation facilities, other Clark County trails, Lake Mead National Recreation Area and other adjacent public lands

Sustainable Consumption and & Community Health
