Our Commitment to Conservation

Persistent drought has shown us just how vulnerable our limited water resources are, and how important it is that we conserve water. The City of Henderson adopted the Southern Nevada Water Authority's Drought Plan on March 4, 2003, and integrated water conservation measures from the Drought Plan into the Henderson Municipal Code 14.14. Some popular items the conservation code addresses are:

  • Water Waste Definitions

  • Landscape Watering Restrictions

  • Landscape Material Restrictions

  • Pool and Hot Tub Draining Requirements

  • Establishment of an Administrative Fine Process for enforcement of the code

Before asking our citizens to cut back on water use, the City of Henderson looks for ways to conserve water wherever possible. For example, the Fire Department uses special hose nozzles that use less water than regular nozzles but are just as effective in fighting fires and City facilities take advantage of low-flow faucets and toilets. The Parks and Recreation Department created a comprehensive Drought Response Plan that has reduced its water use by nearly 50 percent since 2002. We continue to seek innovative and responsible ways to control our water use.

Watering Restrictions

Residential and commercial landscape irrigation is restricted on Sunday and certain days of the week based on the season. All customers are assigned to a watering group, labeled A, B, C, D and E, that defines what day(s) of the week landscape irrigation is allowed. Watering group assignments are based on the customer's location address. Click HERE to view assigned watering group.

  • Irrigation between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7p.m., from May 1 through August 31, is not allowed. This is also referred to as time-of-day restriction.

  • Watering by hand using a container, or positive shut-off nozzle on your water hose, is allowed any day of the week regardless of your assigned watering days.

  • You may request an exemption allowing you to irrigate patched or reseeded turf outside your assigned watering days, for a period of 30 days once per year. Submit your exemption request through Contact Henderson by selecting the Conservation topic. Time-of-day restrictions will apply when you are irrigating repaired or re-seeded turf.

Landscape Material Restrictions and Turf Installation:

The installation of new turf in residential front yards, common areas, medians, and non-residential developments is prohibited. Turf installation on side and rear yards is limited to 50 percent or less of the total square footage of the landscaped area. Homes that currently have desert landscaping may not be allowed to replace that landscaping with turf.
